Borislav Mitkov

Borislav Mitkov is a Russian comics artist who makes heavy use of planes in his paintings. The planes are mostly made up of a single brushstroke, which helps to separate them from one another.

Alice X Zhang

Alice X. Zhang is another artist who imitates the traditional look in her digital paintings. She often uses dim lighting and almost always has busy backgrounds full of interesting brushstrokes.

Marumiyan

Marumiyan's style is very graphic, utilising strong black lines and high contrast. The simple background against the highly detailed figure works to great effect, and the detail in the foliage on the figure is astounding.

J C Leyendecker

J C Leyendecker was an artist from the early 20th century. His visible brushstrokes appeal to me, as do the sort of sketchy lines around the figures. I also feel that Leyendeckers style is realistic, yet just simplified enough without becoming a cartoon. This gives us the best of both worlds.

Matteo Scalera

Matteo Scalera is a contemporary digital artist who uses a highly angular visual style. He uses the planes of the face to create believable lighting, and has the ability to make his pieces appear traditional despite their digital nature.

Grzegorz Domardzski

Grzegorz Domardzski uses a simple colour palette to make this image stand out, and the use of a singular complimentary colour helps to break up the composition to keep things interesting.

Kyle Anderson

Kyle Anderson is a digital artist who creates vector-based images. While I have little interest in this, I really like the high contrast he uses, and his abstract backgrounds which make use of the same colours as the foreground image yet still stand out.

Bio

I was born in Lower Hutt in 1993, where I lived for my entire life. As an infant I was afflicted with the rare Kawasaki disease, which proved near fatal. Prior to moving to into a flat in Wellington, I had always lived a ten minute walk from the place where I was born. I grew up as the middle child, having an older brother and a younger sister. We traveled around New Zealand a lot as kids, visiting all of the South Island and most of the North Island, however I have never once left the country. My childhood consisted mostly of playing video games and drawing with my friends from school, though most (if not all of them) have since given up the latter hobby. Throughout my life, my auburn hair has been my defining feature.  My brother and I went to St Patrick’s College Silverstream. In my early teens, a friend introduced me to comic books, and I have loved them ever since. As for employment, at age 12 I inherited my brothers old paper run, before getting a job at a local bakery at age 16. Then, after moving into Wellington, I found employment at the local bottle store. Despite this constant employment, I never seem to have money since I always blow it all on things that interest me, like comics and art books, rather than necessities. I like to think of myself as humorous and laid back, though my "go-with-the-flow" attitude is often mistaken for an uncaring one. However, this attitude has worked out pretty well for me so far.
